Dying Without a Will in Malaysia 2026: Your Spouse Does Not Get Everything, and Sabah Uses a Different Rulebook
If a non-Muslim Malaysian dies without a will leaving a spouse, children and one surviving parent, section 6 of the Distribution Act 1958 gives the spouse one quarter, the children one half and the parent one quarter. Almost nobody expects the third name on that list. Cross the sea to Sabah and the same family is governed by a different statute, the Intestate Succession Ordinance 1960, under which the spouse takes one third, the children take the rest and the surviving parent takes nothing at all. We read both texts in full on 9 September 2026, along with the Small Estates (Distribution) Act 1955. Three things in them are almost never reported: the parent's share, a Sabah rule that reduces a married daughter's portion by whatever her parents settled on her at her marriage, and a definition of "child" that quietly excludes children adopted under the wrong one of Malaysia's two adoption laws.
The Gig Workers Tribunal Heard Its First Case on 1 September. No Lawyers Were Allowed in the Room
Malaysia's Gig Workers Tribunal sat for the first time on 1 September 2026, at the Kuching labour office in Sarawak. The case was an e-hailing worker against GrabCar Sdn Bhd over Saver Trips, Advance Booking and cashback incentives, and the worker argued it himself because section 36 of the Gig Workers Act 2025 bars advocates and solicitors from representing anyone before the Tribunal. The hearing was adjourned for further testimony. We read the gazetted Act 872 clause by clause and it answers two questions the first case raises: how a rider actually gets to the Tribunal, which is not by walking in, and who the Act covers, which for anyone not working through a platform is a list of exactly nine services printed in the Schedule. Freelance design, copywriting, coding and tutoring are not on it.
Nursing Home Prices in KL and the Klang Valley 2026: The Room Moves the Bill Five Times Further Than the Illness
Only one Klang Valley nursing home publishes its full price grid, and it settles an argument most families never get to have. At Seavoy in Desa Melawati, moving an ambulant resident from a 6 to 8 bedded ward into a large single room adds RM3,200 a month. Moving that same resident from the lightest care category to bedridden, in the same room, adds RM600 to RM700. The room is the expensive decision, not the diagnosis. We read eight Klang Valley operators' own websites on 9 September 2026 and found four that publish a ringgit figure and four that do not, one brand charging RM2,100 more for the same all-inclusive package by postcode, one publishing four different prices for the same two-bedded room, and a service tax question that turns on which government department the home is registered with.
