> Quick view: Bataras, the supermarket chain that exists only in Sabah and Labuan, is running its Merdeka Bersama, Jimat Bersama catalogue from 28 August to 8 September 2026 across 58 named outlets. Cheapest line is enoki mushrooms at RM0.89 per 100g pack. The cover prints "All Item Limited 2 Units Per Customer Per Day", so the plan of one big stock-up run does not work here. The carton prices are not the answer either: the Milo carton saves 28 sen, the Win2 carton 44 sen. The one thing with a real deadline is Nestle's Bataras-only prize tier, 200 vouchers of RM350, which stops on 8 September while the national contest carries on to 30 September.

Bataras is easy to miss if you have never lived in Sabah. It trades only in Sabah and Labuan, under five different fascias, and is run out of Level 2 of the Kolombong hypermarket, Mile 5 and a half, Jalan Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu. What has changed, and what the flyer never mentions, is that Bataras is no longer independent: Econsave acquired Bataras Sdn Bhd in May 2025, a fact disclosed in passing in a June 2026 Bursa filing when IJM sold the Sandakan hypermarket building Bataras occupies to an Econsave company for RM47.5 million. Bataras' own About page still names Goh Thian Teck, who bought the first outlet in 1998, as managing director and CEO. Its whole promotional output online is a single page carrying one catalogue at a time. The current one went up on 28 August 2026 at 2.29pm, eight JPEG pages at 1873 x 2560 pixels, and it is the only place these prices are published.

That last point set a clock, and the clock has run out. This article originally predicted that on 9 September there would be no public record that a kilo of chicken thigh was RM12.99 or that Sazarice Cap Anggur 10kg was RM40.49. That prediction was wrong, in the more awkward direction.

What happened on 9 September: nothing

We re-checked every Bataras channel on the morning of 9 September 2026, the day after the catalogue died. Nothing has replaced it, and nothing has been taken down.

The website still serves the expired book. The promotions page at bataras.com carries the same eight JPEG pages, BTR09-pg1 through BTR09-pg8, at the same 1873 x 2560 pixels. The site's own media library has accepted no upload since 28 August 2026 at 2.29pm: the timestamps on those eight files run 14:29:01 to 14:29:27, and the single newest item behind them anywhere on the site is a WhatsApp image from 14:31 that same afternoon. Searching that library for every Bataras catalogue it has ever held returns exactly one issue, BTR09. Earlier issues really have been pruned; this one simply has not been.

Facebook is no fresher. Every dated product card on the official page at facebook.com/BatarasSdnBhdOFFICIAL still carries the stamp "Sah Sehingga 08/09/2026". We counted fourteen of those stamps across the visible grid and not one date later than it.

The contest page is worse than stale. The Bataras X Nestle entry in the site's Contest menu still carries the *Peraduan Ganjaran Kasih Sekeluarga Bersama Nestle 2026* terms, which closed at 23:59:59 on 30 June 2026. On 9 September that page is 71 days out of date. The other two entries in the same menu, Points Redemption and Bataras x Mydebit, are empty stubs: a page heading with nothing underneath it.

So the position that catches people out is this one. The prices are still on the screen, still legible, and still the first thing you find if you search for a Bataras promotion, and not one of them is valid. Bataras' own disclaimer on page eight already covers it: prices are accurate at the time of printing and subject to change without prior notice. The time of printing was 28 August.

The Facebook price list the catalogue never showed

The eight catalogue pages are not everything Bataras prices in public. Its Facebook page runs a separate stream of single-product cards under the banner "Save More, Smile More", each with its own ringgit price, its own "Sah Sehingga 08/09/2026" stamp and the same while-stocks-last footnote. None of the following appears anywhere in the eight-page flyer:

  • Khind Stand Fan SF165GY, 16 inch, 50W, at RM99.00 each
  • Econsave Wooden Ironing Board 621(1), 42 x 112cm, at RM33.90 each
  • Econsave Charcoal Briquette 3kg at RM12.90 each
  • HKT ecoPlast PP Disposable Plate, 9 inch, 50 pieces, at RM10.50 each
  • Ladies' short-sleeve T-shirt, S to 2XL and free size, assorted, at RM19.00 each
  • Kids' underwear, 2s or 3s a pack, assorted, at RM8.00 each

Two of those six are the story. The wooden ironing board and the charcoal briquette are Econsave house-brand products, sitting on Bataras shelves in Sabah and advertised on Bataras' own page under Econsave's own tagline. The takeover this article had to infer from a June 2026 Bursa filing about a Sandakan building is now visible in the housewares aisle.

One more thing on those cards has not expired. The Bataras logo they carry prints its own standing tagline, "Bandingkan Harga Kami" - compare our prices - and the chain backs that with a written promise, which is the next section.

The wiper deal, corrected by Bataras' own second channel

Further down, this article's list of pricing quirks says the Carzone silicone car wiper is not really a deal. The catalogue prints it as "BUY 2 @ RM19.90 Each", and two at RM19.90 each is RM39.80, exactly what you would pay buying them one at a time.

The Facebook card for the same product, the same T639 14in to 26in wiper, carrying the same 8 September end date, prints it as "BUY 2 @ RM19.90" and drops the word *Each*.

Those are two different offers. Without *Each*, the natural reading is two wipers for RM19.90 in total, which is RM9.95 apiece and a real half-price cut. With it, there is no discount at all. Bataras published both wordings itself, on two of its own channels, for one product in one promotion period. We cannot tell you which one the till would have charged, and the promotion has closed, so it is no longer actionable. The transferable lesson is: when a Bataras multi-buy tile does not spell out whether the price is each or total, check the other channel before you assume. The two do not always agree.

The one Bataras promise that does not expire

On Bataras' News and Events page, under the heading KAMI PATUH - we comply - sits a standing commitment worth more to a regular Sabah shopper than most of the flyer. In the company's own words: *"Sekiranya pelanggan mendapati harga yang dipamerkan berbeza dengan harga imbasan di kaunter, kami dari Pihak Bataras akan patuhi harga yang lebih rendah."*

If a customer finds that the displayed price differs from the price that scans at the counter, Bataras honours the lower of the two, and it points you to the customer service counter to sort it out. There is no campaign attached, no date, no minimum spend and no product list. It applied before this catalogue, it applies today with the catalogue dead, and it will apply when the next one goes up.

It matters more than usual right now, precisely because of everything above. When the flyer on the company website is past its end date and the shelf label may or may not have been switched back, the gap between the displayed price and the scanned price stops being hypothetical. Photograph the shelf label before you walk to the till.

Bataras says it has never run a Facebook giveaway

The same News and Events page carries a notice dated 25 November 2024 that belongs in any article about Bataras contests. Posts had been circulating on Facebook offering cash, phones and shopping vouchers to people who entered a Bataras competition. Bataras' response is unambiguous: *"Bataras Sdn Bhd tidak pernah membuat sebarang peraduan seperti yang ditularkan"* - Bataras has never run any contest of the sort being shared - and it states that the accounts behind them are fake accounts impersonating the company.

Read that against the real contests in this catalogue and the test becomes simple. Every genuine Bataras-tied prize in the Merdeka book was run by a brand, not by Bataras: Nestle's RM350 voucher tier, Vida's RM380 voucher, BOH's national pool. Each one required a printed receipt, carried a named brand's published terms and gave a brand hotline or WhatsApp number. A prize draw that lives entirely inside a Facebook post, with no brand partner and no receipt, is not a Bataras promotion. Bataras' own channels are bataras.com, facebook.com/BatarasSdnBhdOFFICIAL, Instagram @batarasofficial, a TikTok account and a YouTube channel, and the Facebook page's intro names the registered entity outright: Bataras Sdn. Bhd. (199801017117) (473246-D).

The line that decides how you shop this

At the bottom of the cover, in small italics beside the Visa and Mastercard logos, sit two conditions. The first is ordinary: "Promosi Sah Di Bataras Sahaja", the promotion is valid at Bataras only. The second is the one worth reading twice: "All Item Limited 2 Units Per Customer Per Day."

Not two units of the featured items. Not two units on opening weekend. Every item, two units, per customer, per day, for the whole run.

For most baskets that changes nothing. For the shopper who drives in from Ranau or Kudat once a fortnight and buys detergent and milk powder in bulk, it changes everything. Hero 99 powder detergent 2.1kg is RM8.90 and Oh Mai liquid detergent 3.8L is RM15.99; you may take two of each, and then you are done until tomorrow. S-26 Progress 1.65kg is RM102.90 and S-26 Promise 1.65kg is RM91.90; two tins a day is the ceiling.

The run is twelve days long, 28 August through 8 September inclusive, so the total you could buy of any one line is 24 units across 24 separate trips. Six shopping days remained when this went up, which is twelve units. The cap is aimed at the single stockpiling visit, not at the household that shops normally.

The carton prices are not the workaround

The obvious escape is the multi-pack. Buy the carton, count it as one unit, walk out with twelve tins. Bataras prints five carton prices in this catalogue, and the table above sets each against the single price printed on the same page. The result is not what a shopper reasonably expects.

A carton of twelve Milo Activ-Go 900g tins is RM224.00. Twelve tins at the flyer's own single price of RM18.69 is RM224.28. The carton saves 28 sen, a discount of 0.1 per cent, on a RM224 commitment. A carton of 36 Win2 Potato Crisp is RM100.00 against RM100.44 in singles, so 44 sen. Yeo's Teh Krisantimum is 60 sen better by the carton, Fanta 1.5L RM1.08 better across twelve bottles.

Exactly one carton on these eight pages is worth the shelf space. Adabi Serbuk Kunyit Campuran 250g is RM5.90 a pack, and 40 packs is RM229.00 against RM236.00 in singles. That is RM7.00, or about 3 per cent, and it is the only carton where the saving covers more than a bag of onions.

What Bataras does not print anywhere is whether a carton counts as one unit or as its contents against the two-a-day cap. Two Milo cartons is 24 tins, which would make the cap meaningless; 24 units would make the carton unbuyable. Neither reading is stated on the flyer or on bataras.com, so if you are planning around it, ask at the counter before you load the trolley.

The RM350 voucher tier, and the date almost nobody will notice

Page four of the catalogue carries Nestle's Peraduan Gaji Seumur Hidup, the salary-for-life contest. The national mechanic is printed plainly: buy RM20 of Nestle products, scan the QR code, and the prize board is RM3,500 a month for life for one winner, RM3,500 a month for 24 months for two more, RM3,500 a month for 12 months for eighteen more, plus 10,000 weekly rewards of RM100. Terms sit at dearnestle.com.my/gaji-seumur-hidup-2026 and the hotline is 1800 88 3433. That contest runs 1 August to 30 September 2026.

Underneath it is a separate strip headed Hadiah Eksklusif di BATARAS. Buy RM30 of Nestle products, it says, for a better chance to win, and the prize named there is Hadiah Utama x 200: Baucar Bataras bernilai RM350. Two hundred grand prizes, RM350 each, RM70,000 of Bataras vouchers in total, and they exist only for people shopping at Bataras.

The strip carries its own dates: Tempoh Promosi: 28 Ogos - 8 Sep 2026. The same twelve days as the catalogue, not the national contest's two months.

So a Sabahan who buys a RM31.68 Nestle basket on 8 September is in both draws. The same basket on 9 September is in the national draw only, and the 200 vouchers have gone. If you were going to buy Milo, Nescafe, Maggi, Nestum or KitKat this month anyway, the arithmetic says buy it this week. The flyer prices those lines at Milo Activ-Go 900g RM18.69, Nescafe 3in1 15-25 sticks RM12.99, Maggi Syiok Multipek 5 x 77-88g RM7.39, Nestum 3in1 RM10.90 and KitKat Sharebag 18 x 15g RM18.50. Milo plus Nescafe alone is RM31.68 and clears the RM30 line.

One honest caveat: the strip's wording is "lebih berpeluang untuk menang", a better chance to win, with an asterisk pointing to the contest terms. It does not spell out whether RM30 is a hard gate for the voucher pool or a weighting on top of the RM20 national entry. Read the Nestle terms if you are entering for the vouchers specifically.

The second Bataras-only prize, and one that is not

Facing the Nestle strip is Vida's Raikan Merdeka, Rezeki Berganda, running 1 August to 30 September 2026. This one is unmistakably Bataras-tied because the prize is a Bataras voucher: one grand prize of a RM380 Bataras voucher plus one carton of Vida product, your choice of variant. Three steps, printed in full: buy RM10 of Vida products in one official receipt; answer whether it is true or false that Vida Zero is a sparkling drink with no sugar, calories or colouring; then scan the QR and WhatsApp your name, your answer, your IC number and your phone number to +60 10-246 6181 with a photo of the receipt.

RM10 of Vida is cheap to reach at the flyer's prices: Vida C 325ml is RM2.19, Vida Zero 325ml is RM1.99 and Vida Water 500ml is RM1.99. Five cans of Vida Zero is RM9.95, which does not clear it; six is RM11.94, which does.

The third contest on the page is BOH's Secawan Sejuta Memori, 1 August to 30 September 2026, with a RM110,000 prize pool headed by a Proton e.MAS 5, then one RM15,000 domestic travel voucher, 100 consolation prizes of a RM100 Petronas card and 160 weekly prizes of RM100 in Touch n Go eWallet credit. Entry is RM15 of BOH products in a single receipt. Bataras' logo sits on that artwork, but the prizes are BOH's national pool, not a Bataras allocation, so there is no reason to make a special trip for it. BOH is priced here at RM13.90 for the Teh Masala Latte and Aneka Latte 12-sticks, RM13.90 for the 3-in-1 instant mix, RM10.90 for 500g of loose leaf and RM7.90 for the 80-bag teapot pack.

The Econsave connection, and a contest page two campaigns out of date

Two things sit behind this catalogue that the flyer itself never explains.

The first is why the Econsave book on the shelf in Kuala Lumpur this fortnight carries the same campaign name and the same closing date. Econsave's *Merdeka Bersama! Jimat Bersama!* also runs 28 August to 8 September 2026. That is not coincidence and it is not two chains copying a Merdeka slogan: Econsave bought Bataras in May 2025, so this is one owner running one campaign under two fascias. The tell is in the archive. Bataras' previous Nestle tie-up, *Peraduan Ganjaran Kasih Sekeluarga Bersama Nestle 2026*, paid its winners in Econsave vouchers — ten grand prizes of RM500 and 150 monthly vouchers of RM150 — and its participating-branch clause read "all Econsave, Econsave Express and Bataras branches". The two chains had already been merged behind the till before either flyer said so.

The second is a trap for anyone who does the sensible thing and looks up the terms. Bataras' site has a Contest menu with a Bataras X Nestle entry, which is exactly where you would go to check whether that RM30 threshold is a hard gate for the 200 vouchers. It is not the current contest. As of 6 September 2026 that page still carries the *Ganjaran Kasih Sekeluarga* terms, and those closed at 23:59:59 on 30 June 2026. Everything on it is wrong for the campaign in your hand: the qualifying spend is RM20 rather than RM30, entries go to WhatsApp 012-396 6519 rather than the number on the current artwork, entry is capped at one per IC per week, and the prizes are Econsave vouchers rather than the RM350 Bataras vouchers. The live terms for *Gaji Seumur Hidup* are at dearnestle.com.my/gaji-seumur-hidup-2026, not on bataras.com.

So the open question from the flyer — whether RM30 hard-gates the voucher pool or merely weights your odds on top of the RM20 national entry — is still open, and Bataras' own website cannot answer it. Ask at the customer service counter, or read Nestle's terms directly.

Two free gifts with a threshold worth checking

Page six runs two gift-with-purchase offers whose conditions are easy to trip over.

Nivea gives a football-theme pillow, three designs to collect, with any purchase of Nivea or Nivea Men products worth RM48 and above including at least one deodorant, in a single receipt, redeemed at the customer service counter while stocks last. The deodorant clause is the trap: RM48 of body lotion alone does not qualify. The flyer prices a Nivea or Nivea Men roll-on twin pack 50ml x 2 at RM18.90 and the Nivea vitamin range body lotion 300/320ml at RM16.90, so two twin packs plus a lotion is RM54.70 and qualifies comfortably.

Glad2Glow gives a Panthenol Makeup Remover 150ml worth RM18 with a minimum RM35 of Glad2Glow products including one Glad2Glow Deep Pore Facial Wash. Its range is banded on the page at RM14.90 for the cleanser range, RM19.90 for moisturisers and RM24.90 for body serums, so a cleanser plus a moisturiser is RM34.80 and misses by 20 sen. A cleanser plus a body serum is RM39.80 and clears it.

Where these prices actually apply

The footer of page eight is the participating-outlet list, and it is more precise than anything on the website. Fifty-eight outlets, grouped by format:

Hypermarket (18): Bundusan, Grand Merdeka, Indah Permai, ITCC, Keningau, Kolombong, Labuan, Menggatal, Papar Plaza, Putatan, Putatan Railway, Sandakan, Semporna, Semporna Floating, Semporna Bugaya, Tamparuli, Tawau, Tawau Apas.

Superstore (27): Financial Park Labuan, Inanam Plaza, Kampung Kelanahan, Kepayan, Ketiau, Kingfisher, Kota Belud, Kota Marudu, Kunak, Kundasang, Legasi Sulaman, Mengkabong, Plaza Mutiara, Pekan Keningau, Putera Jaya, Ranau, Sembulan, Semporna Causeway, Semporna Melur Spur, Semporna Sabindo, Sikuati, Stephen Tan, Taman Orkid, Telipok, Tenom, Tuaran, Wawasan Plaza.

Marketplace (2): Gaya Street and Suria Sabah. Fresh Mart (8): 1 Sulaman, Asia City, Buah Duku, Damai, Ganang, Hilltop, Inanam, Kota Marudu. Cash & Carry (3): Menggatal, Tamparuli, Telipok Ria.

Now cross-check that against Bataras' own Locate Us page and the two lists disagree, in both directions. Re-counted on 9 September 2026, the locator carries 56 outlet entries in only four formats - 20 Hypermarket, 25 Superstore, 9 Freshmart and 2 Marketplace - and has no Cash & Carry section at all, even though the flyer names three Cash & Carry outlets. It also lists a Kudat superstore and an Iramanis Fresh Mart that the flyer footer leaves out, while Asia City and Damai, both named in the flyer's Fresh Mart line, appear nowhere on the locator. Bataras' Facebook page then gives a third figure again, describing itself in its own intro as the "Proud Parent of 60 More Outlets & Still Growing". Fifty-eight on the flyer, fifty-six on the locator, sixty on Facebook: no Bataras channel agrees with another on how many Bataras there are.

Practical reading: neither list is authoritative on its own. If your branch is Asia City or Damai, the flyer says the prices are yours even though the corporate locator does not know you exist. If you shop at Kudat or Iramanis, the footer does not name you, so confirm at the till before you plan a basket around a flyer price. And one line applies everywhere: "Textile Only Available At Selected Outlets", so the RM12 kids' tees and RM19 men's sport tees on page eight are not a given at a Fresh Mart.

Worked example: a RM138.61 Kota Kinabalu basket

Using only prices printed in this catalogue, a fortnight of household shopping for a small family:

Sazarice Cap Anggur Kuning 10kg rice RM40.49, chicken thigh RM12.99/kg, yellow onion RM2.90/kg, Dettol shower gel 720g refill RM7.99, Munchy's Oat Krunch RM8.99, Vitagen Less Sugar 5 x 125ml RM6.29, Arla sliced cheddar 200g RM7.90, Knife light soy sauce 500ml RM4.99, Hero 99 detergent powder 2.1kg RM8.90, Softlan fabric softener refill RM5.49. That is RM106.93.

Add the two Nestle lines that clear the voucher threshold, Milo Activ-Go 900g RM18.69 and Nescafe 3in1 RM12.99, and the basket is RM138.61 with RM31.68 of it Nestle. One trip, one receipt, inside the two-a-day cap on every line, and into the 200-voucher pool.

Three small pricing quirks worth knowing

The Eveready LED ladder is not linear. A60 Soft White bulbs are priced RM3.75 for 5W, RM4.30 for 7W, RM4.90 for 9W, RM5.30 for 11W and RM6.90 for 13W. Per watt that is 75.0, 61.4, 54.4, 48.2 and 53.1 sen. The 11W is the cheapest light in the catalogue and the 13W is worse value than the 9W.

Rice cookers reward going bigger. Sabichi aluminium rice cookers are RM62.90 for the 1L, RM76.90 for the 1.8L and RM89.90 for the 2.8L. Per litre of capacity: RM62.90, RM42.72 and RM32.11. The largest is half the price per litre of the smallest.

One "deal" reads two ways. Carzone silicone car wipers are printed in the catalogue as "BUY 2 @ RM19.90 Each". Buying two at RM19.90 each is RM39.80, which is the same as buying them one at a time at RM19.90, so on the catalogue's wording no discount exists. Bataras' Facebook card for the same wiper drops the word "Each", which flips it into a genuine two-for-RM19.90 cut. See the correction above: the two channels do not agree, and the tile alone does not settle it.

Who should skip it

Skip the special trip if what you wanted was a bulk run on one product. The two-a-day cap and the near-zero carton savings mean this catalogue is built for normal weekly shopping, not for stocking a kedai or a kitchen for the year.

Skip the contests unless you were buying the brand anyway. RM30 of Nestle for a 1-in-a-lot chance at one of 200 RM350 vouchers is fine if it is your usual Milo; it is a poor reason to buy coffee you do not drink.

Nothing in the catalogue is worth a trip now. It closed on 8 September 2026 and the Nestle RM350 voucher window shut with it. What outlives the flyer is the three brand-run national contests printed on its pages, all of which carry 30 September 2026 on their own artwork: Nestle's *Gaji Seumur Hidup*, Vida's *Raikan Merdeka, Rezeki Berganda* and BOH's *Secawan Sejuta Memori*. Those are national draws you can enter from any qualifying receipt at any participating retailer, so they are not a reason to drive to a Bataras. One honest limit on that: we could not re-verify them against the brands' own terms on 9 September, because dearnestle.com.my, where Nestle's live terms sit, did not respond to us at all that morning. Check the brand's own page before you enter. The one Bataras-specific thing still worth using is the KAMI PATUH price pledge above, and it costs nothing.

Fine print that catches people

Bataras' own disclaimer on page eight is blunt: prices and information are accurate at the time of printing but subject to change without prior notice, the company will not be held liable for unintentional errors or omissions, it reserves the right to refuse sale to traders, offers are valid while stocks last, and all transactions are in ringgit.

Two more things the flyer shows rather than says. The e-wallets accepted are listed on the cover as Alipay, Boost, GoodKredit, MCash, Touch n Go eWallet and vcash, alongside Visa and Mastercard, so a card-only wallet is fine but not every Malaysian e-wallet is on that strip. And Bataras Payflex, promoted on the website as "Beli Sekarang, Bayar Kemudian", is buy-now-pay-later credit issued through Boost, not a Bataras discount. Splitting a RM138 grocery basket into instalments to catch a 28 sen carton saving is the wrong trade.
