8 Things to Do in Bintulu, Sarawak 2026 — and Why the Official List Is Sixteen Years Out of Date
Bintulu is the town most travellers drive through on the way from Miri to Sibu, and the official reason to stop has not been rewritten since 19 August 2010. That is the date printed on the Bintulu Development Authority's own Places of Interest page, which still describes the nightly pasar malam as a place to buy smuggled cigarettes and liquor. Sarawak Tourism Board's Bintulu page is current but lists only five major attractions and leaves Similajau National Park — the division's best-known park — off it entirely, while its Useful Information boxes for Kidurong Tower and Tanjung Batu Beach are empty: no hours, no fee. Similajau itself is the bigger problem: Sarawak Forestry Corporation's own page for it says repair works have the park closed to visitors, and its live registration portal will not let you book a slot. So we went to the operators themselves. Taman Tumbina, the only zoo in northern Sarawak, publishes RM2.00 for an adult and RM0.50 for a child of seven and above, 9.00am to 4.30pm daily — on a website whose copyright line still reads 2004. Here is what is actually there in 2026, what it costs where anyone will say, and what has been built since the official list was written.

Sabah Parks publishes its entire fee schedule as one downloadable document, approved by the Director of Sabah Parks and effective 1 January 2023 — and almost nobody reads it. We downloaded all 33 pages this run and worked through every line for the eight parks that charge visitors. The findings that matter: a Malaysian adult pays RM10 at Kinabalu Park where an international visitor pays RM50; the Mount Kinabalu climbing permit is RM100 against RM400, a four-fold gap; Malaysians aged 12 and under, 60 and over, and persons with disabilities enter six of the eight parks free — but not Turtle Islands Park and not Sipadan Island Park, the two most expensive gates in the state. And one day's diving at Sipadan carries RM300 of official Sabah Parks fees for a Malaysian before an operator has quoted you anything at all.

A weekday round in the Klang Valley is quoted at anything from RM178 to RM432 depending on which club you ask — and the quoted number is not the number you pay. Three of the eight clubs here publish a full tariff on their own website, one publishes a running promotional rate, two publish nothing at all, and two are membership clubs where a visitor cannot buy a round at any price. The gap between the headline and the bill is almost always the same line item: the caddy, which every publishing club in the Klang Valley calls compulsory and only some include in the quoted rate. We read every rate table and tariff card on these clubs' own sites on 25 August 2026, did the addition, and found two live Merdeka promotions worth more than the discount printed on them.

Most Kuantan itineraries are copied from each other, and most of them still send you to attractions that are currently closed. Majlis Bandaraya Kuantan runs its own tourism portal listing hours, distances and ticket prices for every stop in the district, and read carefully it says two useful things nobody repeats. First, the Sungai Lembing mine tunnel, Bukit Panorama and the Cherating Turtle Sanctuary are all listed as closed for maintenance — three of the town's postcard stops, gone from the plan. Second, the prices are not what aggregators quote: Menara Kuantan 188's own ticketing site charges a Malaysian adult RM13 for the Observation Deck from Monday to Thursday but RM23 from Friday to Sunday and on public and school holidays, against RM38 for an international visitor on any day; the Sungai Lembing museum is RM2 with children free, Gua Charas is RM2, and the state's royal weaving complex is free. The strangest number sits at Jeti Shahbandar, where two river cruises leave from the same jetty at RM99 and RM18 a head.
